ABOUT US

Who We Are

Oak Avenue Intermediate School serves students in the seventh and eighth grades. Oak received a 2026 California Distinguished Schools award and was named a National Middle School to Watch. Oak recognizes the unique characteristics of the middle school student. Teachers, parents, and staff empower students to take responsibility for their physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and creative learning. Using a team approach, instructional staff recognizes students needs and regularly utilizes a broad range of appropriate strategies to enable them to learn. Oak has an active and supportive PTA, with parents assisting with co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Oak provides opportunities for parents to be partners in the education of young adolescents and to understand the uniqueness of this age group. Support staff coordinates and facilitates the program; the physical plant, equipment, resource materials, and technology complement the program. This total school experience enables each stakeholder to feel a sense of connectedness and for all students to become reflective adults capable of leading meaningful lives in a changing society. As a two time platinum PBIS recipient Oak Ave embeds the following “Royal Three” into everyday life, compassion, integrity and responsibility!

Through the support of a committed and well-equipped educational community, each student will acquire the skills necessary to be successful in a variety of future academic, creative, emotional, social, and physical endeavors.

Dear Oak Avenue Families,

I hope you and your family have had a wonderful summer. As we prepare to welcome our students back for another exciting school year, I wanted to share an important leadership update with our Oak Avenue community.

First, I would like to congratulate Mr. Jordan Lessem on his new role as Interim Director of State and Federal Programs for TCUSD.

During the past five years, Mr. Lessem's leadership has helped Oak Avenue continue to thrive. His dedication to students, staff, and families has strengthened our school community and contributed to the many accomplishments and recognitions our campus has earned. While we will certainly miss seeing him on campus each day, we are excited that he will continue supporting Oak Avenue and all TCUSD schools in his new districtwide role.

It is an honor to step into the role of Principal and continue serving the Oak Avenue community. Over the past year as Assistant Principal, I have had the privilege of getting to know so many of our students, families, and staff. I have seen firsthand the incredible partnership that makes Oak such a special place, and I am grateful for the opportunity to build upon the strong foundation that already exists.

As we begin this new school year, my commitment to you is simple: I will work each day to support our students, partner with our families, listen thoughtfully, communicate openly, and ensure Oak Avenue remains a place where every student feels valued, challenged, and inspired to succeed. Together, we will continue providing the exceptional educational experience that our community has come to expect.

I am also pleased to welcome Mrs. Ellen Luu as our Interim Assistant Principal. Mrs. Luu brings a wealth of experience in education, most recently serving as a Program Specialist in Temple City Unified School District. Her background in supporting students and collaborating with educators will be a tremendous asset to our school, and I look forward to working alongside her this year.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Oak Avenue Intermediate School. I am excited for the year ahead and all that we will accomplish together. We look forward to welcoming our students back to campus and beginning another year of learning, growth, and success.

See you soon,

Shelley Scanlan
